World Diabetes Day Reminds People to Get Diagnosed

On December 20, 2006, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution recognizing diabetes as a chronic, debilitating, and costly disease deserving of a worldwide campaign, and named November 14th as World Diabetes Day.

In recognition of the 2007 World Diabetes Day, New York State Health Commissioner Dr. Richard Daines acknowledged that “Since 1994, the State witnessed nearly a 100% increase in the number of people with diabetes, with a staggering 1.5 million New Yorkers now estimated to have the disease.” Commissioner Daines also highlighted the 15 New York State-funded Community Coalitions for Diabetes Prevention, which seek to raise awareness about ways to prevent and manage diabetes.
