Activ8Kids! Childhood Obesity Prevention Program
The New York State departments of Health and Education launched Activ8Kids! in January 2005 to fight childhood obesity and promote healthy lifestyles among New York State’s children.
Research shows that overweight preschool children are twice as likely to be obese as adults, and older overweight children are even more likely to be overweight as adults. Activ8Kids! instills a regimen in children—under the age eight—of five fruits and vegetables; at least one hour of physical activity; and a reduction of television and video time to fewer than two hours (5+1+2 = 8). An Activ8Kids School Nutrition and Physical Activity Toolkit helps school administrators, teachers, and parents take actions toward improving nutrition and physical activity among children in the school setting.
