New York City Bodega Program
In January 2006, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYCDOHMH) collaborated with 15 bodega owners in Central Brooklyn, South Bronx, and Harlem to pilot a program that offers 1% milk to customers.
In the outer borough neighborhoods, bodegas can represent more than 80% of food sources, but healthy food choices are not consistently available. As of 2006, one in three bodegas in Central Brooklyn sold reduced-fat milk or other healthy foods, like fresh fruits. The program builds partnerships with participating bodega owners to stock 1% milk, offer discounts, display NYCDOHMH educational posters, and distribute health information to customers.
