Eating Well in Harlem: How Available is Health Food?

The New York City Report on Availability of Health Food in Harlem examines the retail food environment in Central and East Harlem, using the Upper East Side as a comparison neighborhood.

Researchers worked with the East and Central Harlem District Public Health Offices of the NYCDOHMH to survey stores within each block and found that in these districts, bodegas and fast food establishments are more abundant and supermarkets are less common compared to the Upper East Side. The bodegas in East and Central Harlem were also less likely to carry healthy food options, including reduced fat milk, low-fat yogurt and cottage cheese, fresh fruit, and leafy green vegetables. The report concluded that it is necessary to provide healthier offerings at local food establishments. Additionally, it is important to promote consumer demand for nutritious food at affordable prices through education and social marketing.
