A Needed Lifeline: Chronically Ill Children and Public Health Insurance Coverage
This report commissioned by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation includes a state-by-state analysis of public health insurance coverage for chronically ill children. New York State is home to 572,503 children with special health care needs—11,531 of whom are uninsured.
The State Health Access Data Assistance Center conducted this analysis, which provides a numerical foundation for the argument that while the State Children's Health Insurance Program and Medicaid help to insure chronically ill children, a population of children remains uncovered. This report enumerates the number of children with special health care needs and further quantifies those among them who forgo or delay care, have a personal doctor, and do not receive all needed mental care.
