Rhode Island Blueprint*
June 2009
In an effort to develop a knowledgeable and accessible system of care to meet the needs of veterans and returning military, a key informant survey and an assessment was undertaken in to identify available resources, document barriers to accessing care, and prepare a strategy to meet emerging needs. This information was requested by General Centracchio, the Adjutant General, Rhode Island National Guard.
The assessment revealed that although services are available in Rhode Island, they are functioning in isolation. Community health care providers are unaware of the services and how to access them. It was also clear that services for soldier’s or veterans’ family members—especially children and adolescents—were minimal at best. Through the development of an interagency task force, the State of Rhode Island envisions putting into operation strategic investments for individuals, families, and communities most affected by the consequences of combat. This report was created by this interagency taskforce as a “blueprint” to address these gaps in services.
