This grant will provide core support to two coalitions working to improve access to, and the quality of, mental health and substance use services for veterans and their families. The two coalitions—the Veterans Mental Health Coalition of New York City, which has more than 150 members, and the Veterans Health Alliance of Long Island, which has more than 80 members—have been diligently working with State policymakers to ensure that resources meet the needs of veterans living in New York State. Each group consists of a cross-section of veterans service and advocacy organizations; behavioral health, health, and social services providers; and local, State, and Federal government officials.

The project will focus on the following activities:

  1. Developing policy agendas to advance appropriate, accessible, high-quality services for veterans with behavioral health problems, and their families.
  2. Preparing and disseminating information to key public officials who are currently working on public policy to improve services for veterans and their families.
  3. Providing training opportunities to social service organizations in New York City and Long Island on expanding services to meet the needs of veterans and their families (approximately six per year in each location).
  4. Holding approximately six meetings per year with each coalition to share information, develop collaborative relationships, showcase programs serving veterans, hear from experts in various areas, and reach consensus on best practices for programs and policies serving veterans in New York State.
