The implementation of Federal reform will require enhanced primary care access, both to care for the influx of newly insured people and to ensure a strong safety net for those who are left behind and remain uninsured. This grant to the Community Health Care Association of New York State (CHCANYS) will leverage Federal dollars and help strengthen the primary care infrastructure in New York State.

Federal health reform allocates $11 billion for community health centers (CHCs) nationally over the next five years. CHCs can use the money to open new sites, expand existing sites, and expand services. Nationally, the number of Americans served by CHCs is expected to double from 10 million to 20 million annually.

To begin this expansion, the Federal government issued a request for proposal to CHCs. Successful applicants will be guaranteed Federal funding increases for the next five years. With this grant, CHCANYS will manage and provide technical assistance to 10 to13 CHCs in medically underserved regions of the State to ensure that they develop and submit competitive, winning applications. To strengthen the quality of submitted applications, NYSHealth funds will support:

  • data collection and analysis;
  • health care and business plan vetting;
  • grant writing support; and
  • project management.
