Facts and Figures

Gaining an understanding of the breadth and scope of the problem is an important preliminary step in addressing a health issue. Despite the abundance of data on either mental health or substance use issues, there is a stark absence of data on co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. A particular lack of co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders data exists at the State and local levels, making it difficult to develop State and regional responses to this issue. The following are State, local, and national data sets that include data on either mental health or substance use indicators. The National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) undertaken by the Federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration is a key national data source that includes data on co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders.
