Racial Disparities in Diabetes
Diabetes affects certain races and ethnicities differently than others. Hispanic New Yorkers have the highest rate of diabetes of all racial and ethnic groups in New York City—13.8% have diabetes—while 11.3% of blacks, 10.1% of Asians, and 6.2% of non-Hispanic whites have the disease. Significantly more blacks and Hispanics die of diabetes complications than do non-Hispanic whites. Disparities in deaths associated with diabetes underscore differences in treatments, self-management, medical complications, and limited access to services.
